Whether you’re planning your 2020 getaway or checking in tomorrow, now is a great time to familiarize yourself with Sanibel Island’s newest restaurants. From island-inspired favorites to southern cuisine and built it yourself bowls—there is something for everyone in the family!
Unfortunately, one of our island favorites, the Blue Coyote has closed but the good news is that one of the hottest restaurants on the island has opened in the space located at the Sanibel Island Golf Course. Malia Island Fusion opened in late 2018 and has quickly become one of Sanibel Island’s most popular restaurants. Offering lunch and dinner, the restaurant’s menu includes a fried-green tomato salad with Key West pink shrimp; jerk-grilled octopus with pineapple, crispy chickpeas and cilantro crema; and bucatini pasta with pan-seared scallops in a creamy Meyer-lemon sauce. Starters range from $12 to $18, with dinner entrees from $26 to $46.
Another great new restaurant is Mudbugs Cajun Kitchen. Bringing the flavors of the bayou to the island, this restaurant has taken over the space of the now closed Chip’s Sanibel Steakhouse. Serving up po’boys, fish and shrimp platters, crawfish crab cakes, and more New Orleans style bites. The interior of the building has been completely renovated with an airy, two-story dining room lined with exposed bricks and wrought iron balconies that are reminiscent of those on Burbon Street.
The final addition to the island restaurant scene is Spoondrift Island Bowls. Starting off as a stall at the Sanibel Farmers Market, Spoondrift has opened their first brick-and-mortar shop in the Bailey’s Grocery Shopping Center. They specialize in build it yourself bowls of healthy, fresh food. Fill your bowl with grains, green, meat, vegetarian and vegan options and more to create a custom bowl. Pre-made signature bowls are also available. They are known for their “Mothership Bowl” filled with Poke, which is any seafood or meat cut into cubes.
