Your pooch loves the sun and sand as much as you do, so make plans to soak up the Florida sunshine together on Sanibel Island’s dog friendly beaches.
The City of Sanibel allows dogs on every public beach on the island if owners clean up after their pets and utilize a leash no more than eight feet long. Pet owners are also asked to stay vigilant so their pets do not disturb local (and protected) wildlife.
Sanibel Island is so pet-friendly that the island was named one of the eight most dog-friendly beaches in the country, as rated by Vetstreet.com, an animal health and lifestyle website. To be specific, the site named Algiers Beach on Sanibel Island to the list.
A few of our favorite beaches, where you and your pup are sure to enjoy your day by the Gulf include Gulfside Beach (Algiers Beach), Bowman’s Beach, and the Causeway Islands.
Gulfside Beach (Algiers Beach)
As one of the many pet-friendly beaches of Sanibel Island, Gulfside Beach (or Algiers Beach) makes a great escape for you and your pet. In addition to fun on the sand, a portion of the beach is located near a Federal nature preserve home to threatened and endangered nesting shorebirds and sea turtles during much of the year. Dogs must be kept on a leash, always. There are picnic tables, wash stations, and restrooms available, and an hourly parking fee is charged between the hours of 7 am to 7 pm (free after 7 pm).
Located on the western end of Sanibel Island, Bowman’s Beach is the perfect place to enjoy sunset with your furry friends. Beautiful and secluded, explore the island on the hiking trails located at this beach. On-site amenities include picnic tables, grills, bathrooms and bike racks. Dogs are allowed, if they are on a leash at all times.
This beach is located along the causeway and two islands (Island A & Island B) built and used to link the mainland to Sanibel Island. The causeway bisects San Carlos Bay a short distance from the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, that allows bay and gulf side access.
Both islands are very popular and can accessed from the water or from the road. Some of the activities enjoyed at the Causeway Islands are fishing, swimming, picnicking, canoeing/kayaking, wind surfing, kite boarding, shelling, sun bathing or just plain relaxing in the shade with your pet at your side.
Island “A” has parking only. Island “B” offers restrooms, drinking fountains (located on each side of the road) and a few picnic tables on the gulf side. Leashed pets are welcomed but, please remember to clean up after your pet.
